Combining the rich, vibrant sound of vintage compressors with the clean, precise character of modern processors, the WesAudio Beta76 FET is a stellar compressor/limiter for any music studio. Put it in Modern mode for transparent operation, or switch it to Vintage mode to add a Carnhill input transformer for enhanced sonic depth and color. Attack time ranges from 20 to 800 microseconds, with Release times ranging from 50ms to 1,100ms. Combined with four selectable compression ratios, the Beta76 FET is rewardingly simple to dial in for a wide range of sound sources. Factor in stereo link capability and a switchable side-chain highpass filter, and it's clear the WesAudio Beta76 FET is a capable studio tool with tons of character.

Modern and Vintage input modes for distinct sonic characteristics

We've used countless studio processors at Sweetwater over the years, and we can confirm that a big part of the "vintage" sound of analog gear comes from the transformers used. And if there's one thing we love to see on analog gear, it's the option to switch a transformer in and out of the signal path. The Beta76 FET offers this with its Modern and Vintage modes. Modern mode utilizes an electronic input circuit for maximum sonic transparency. Vintage mode engages a premium Carnhill input transformer for added richness and depth.

Side-chain highpass filter helps prevent excessive compression

Use the S.C. Filter selector on the Beta76 FET's front panel to engage a highpass filter in the detector, preventing bass frequencies from triggering the compressor. The cutoff frequency is switchable between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 150Hz. Mix engineers at Sweetwater especially like this when using two compressors for stereo applications like drum overheads — the side-chain filter allows the sharp snare and cymbal sounds to trigger compression, while preventing the kick drum's thump from overly-triggering the compressor and crushing everything.

Boost, Cut, or do both

We're often asked here at Sweetwater why some equalizers — like the WesAudio LC-EQP — allow you to both boost and cut within the same frequency range. The answer is best left to your ears instead of frequency response graphs, but the short version is that boosting and cutting at the same frequency will highlight that frequency, while also notching out a bit of audio above the cutoff point. It's a favorite trick among engineers for creating hard-hitting bass drum tracks that still leave enough sonic space for the bass guitar. Or run a vocal track through the LC-EQP, simultaneously boosting 12kHz while cutting at 5kHz — you'll add lovely airiness without adding unwanted presence.

The WesAudio Supercarrier II is an 11-slot 500 Series frame that is fully compatible with the API standard. And you can expect reliable performance even with power-hungry modules, thanks to WesAudio's Independent Slot Power (ISP) technology. ISP completely isolates each module and ensures it receives linear power — it's like housing each module in its own chassis with its own power supply. The Supercarrier II features 11 slots for your modules, XLR connections for each slot, as well as a DB-25 connector for the first eight slots. The WesAudio DUE-PRE 500 Series Preamp has a preamps circuit which is switchable between two amps: RED and GREEN. RED mode is a British classic style preamp (1073) and GREEN is an American vintage style preamp (discrete opamp). Both preamps have unique sonic textures known as a best classical sound preamps. Carnhill transformers are responsible for matching impedance and de/symmetrization circuits. Preamp is loaded with two PADs: IN 20dB PAD and OUT 8dB PAD which allows to saturate both preamp and output transformer.

Additionally DUE-PRE has front input XLR Combo socket which can be used in both ways: as a mic input and as a instrumental input. Instrumental input is a high impedance input of which signal feeds input transformer through FET transistor. Module can draw up to 5 W of power.

SATURATION MODE
ONE KNOB to add color and character to your tracks without using compression

Classic implementations of 1176 provide functionality to disable compression and still add color and character to signals. _MIMAS is no different, however instead of using INPUT and OUTPUT knobs to create desirable effect, You can do it with ONE knob, which configures amount of saturation affecting a signal.

500 SERIES and ng500 SERIES COMPATIBLE

Usage examples:

1. Summing stage automation

ngLEVELER can be integrated in any spot in analog chain which requires signal level management or automation. One of such situation is level management or automation of signal which goes out from our outboard gear to the summing stage. This gives us few very important benefits:

  • POST Compression automation or level management – changing signal level which goes out from our converter (DAW automation) will cause our compressor to behave differently. This makes it impossible to automate, and is quite problematic situation to handle even with simple signal level balance changes. In this setup we can keep our summing stage signal level at same level, and leave automation and signal level management to ngLEVELER so it can be easily recalled upon session load!
  • OUT signal management and automation – all outboard gear have a sweet spot which usually depends on a signal level which comes in. In most cases we don’t want to automate signal going in, but signal which goes out from the device. With ngLEVELER we can easily manage this signal:
    • not to clip next analog stage,
    • Or automate it when needed!

 2. Any analog outboard automation

In this particular example, ngLEVELER is integrated between each analog outboard process input, and output, of course it can be configured only to output, or only to input if needed. ngLEVELER allows us to work with very hot signals where many audio interfaces can’t deal with. Benefits:

  • Precise level management of signal going IN and OUT,
  • High level signal support of outboard OUT signal (ngLEVELER +24dBU and 6dB PAD) allows us to properly tune signal going in to our A/D converter.


3. Analog outboard drive

In this scenario we can configure our stereo processing before and after outboard gear, and link those channels in an opposite way. So while increasing level on the input of our outboard processor, it will automatically decrease on its output before hitting further stage. So we can easily find a sweet spot of our processor which can be fairly high for some vintage gear.


4. Recording session management

Studios of each size need some centerpiece which will help to manage recording and mixing session. Using ngLeveler in such situations, allows to precisely set levels which will hit A/D converter, add some analog saturation, and using “Solo and Mute” buttons manage our sessions with ease. Benefits:

  • Signal level management going IN to A/D converter, with ngLEVELER 6dB PAD and +24dBu of headroom, it is very easy to support very hot signals coming from our microphone preamplifiers.
