Class A preamp design with three input options.
The VT-737sp offers three input options: First, it has a higher-performance microphone input transformer with 48-volt phantom power. Second, the VT-737sp provides an instrument DI high-source input via a jack on the front panel. Finally, the VT-737sp features a balanced line input and discrete high-level Class A circuitry. The Class A preamplifier employs two cascaded, dual vacuum tube triodes with minimal negative feedback. A high-gain switch increases the total gain of the preamplifier. The four high-quality tubes are designed as single-ended anode-coupled followers. A passive/variable highpass filter and hardwired relay bypass round out the VT-737sp’s input signal conditioning. Each of the three inputs includes a phase-reverse relay.
Opto-compressor with little signal path.
The VT-737sp’s opto-compressor has a short signal route and two Class A vacuum tube triodes for gain matching. The optical attenuator functions as a basic passive level controller. Threshold, ratio-compression, attack, and release controls, as well as gain reduction choices on the big VU meter, allow for complete dynamic control ranging from soft compression to hard knee limiting. The dual sweep mid-EQ to side-chain switch provides specialized spectral control, including de-ess. The VT-737sp’s EQ section can be toggled pre- or post-the opto-compressor using a front-panel switch for different effects and tone shaping. A rear panel connection cable connects two VT-737sps for stereo tracking. The compressor bypass is a sealed silver relay for the most direct signal path.
Sweepable EQ with hardwired bypass
For optimal sound performance, the VT-737sp equalizer makes use of 100% discrete Class A high-voltage transistors. The high- and low-frequency bands have the smooth features of an all-passive architecture, while the two mid-bands have variable frequency and switching Q-width selection. The VT-737sp’s improved midband range is extended into the high and low bands via X10 frequency multipliers. The bypass switch uses a sealed silver relay to provide the most direct signal path. When the EQ to sidechain feature is enabled, the high-low EQ remains in the audio stream for “tone enhancement.” The output level control allows for changeable control of the overall signal route. Another dual triode vacuum tube powers the output amplifier, which is completely discrete, Class A, high-current, balanced, and DC coupled with low noise.
