SPL SMC 5.1 Surround Monitor Controller Overview:

The industry standard for 5.1 surround monitoring is the SMC. It integrates speaker management for 5.1 surround and stereo sources with analogue 6-channel volume control.

Choosing Sources and Managing Speakers
The SMC may accept connections from two 5.1 and two stereo input sources. This is significant since two productions are constantly compared during monitoring.

The DAW balanced is connected via the DB25 input. Channels 1-6 should be chosen for 5.1 mixing and channels 7/8 for stereo mixing when it comes to output routing.

Frequently, DVDs are viewed using conventional DVD or Blu-Ray players for comparative analysis. To make loudness equal, their consumer nominal level of -10dBV—which is equivalent to a level difference of 7.8dB to the 0dBu studio level—is corrected in the SMC.

One can select mono for both the front and back stereo pairs.

When a glitch causes the DAW to send full-scale audio garbage, it’s important to use Mute All. You can fast mute here in order to safeguard the speakers and your hearing.

Additionally, each loudspeaker can be turned on or off separately.

The Slave Out DB25 connection receives the balanced inputs via a passive loop. One could attach a multi-channel metering here, for instance.

TRS jacks are used to balance the speaker outputs. When using mono jack plugs (TS), the signal is inherently imbalanced.
