The Elysia Skulpter 500 is more than just a preamp; it’s a full front-end solution for any DAW-based recording setup. The Skulpter 500’s audiophile-grade preamplifier is built around a fully discrete, resistor-controlled Class A amplifier that complements any microphone with its gorgeous, open, natural sound and unparalleled flexibility. If more drive is needed, two variable saturation/filter stages and a sophisticated in-built compressor are available to give vocals and instruments that elusive hit-record gloss right out of the box.

Unlike other preamps, which use a potentiometer to regulate gain, the Elysia Skulpter 500 is built with an audiophile gain-staging topology that uses fixed resistors operated by a cascade of relays and electronic switches. The circuit is controlled by a stepped encoder with 40 gain levels ranging from 3-65 dB. This is a fantastic gain range, beginning whisper-quiet and ending with enough gain to handle even the lowest-output passive ribbon microphones. While the stepped gain control makes it easier to recall precise settings, another significant advantage of this configuration is the absence of an additional attenuation pad, which would hurt the signal-to-noise ratio. The gain circuit is followed by a fully discrete Class A amplifier that, like many tube amps, operates in feed-forward mode (with significant negative feedback). This design produces an effortlessly natural, open sound that complements any source, whether instrumental or vocal.
